In honor of our first post, we thought it would be good to review one of our favorite breweries, Dogfish Head. We're no strangers to breweries and we try to go to a new brewery every chance we get. We've both worked for the Dogfish Head Alehouse in Fairfax, VA so we are familiar with the beers and the brand. Tonight we decided to try Higher Math.
Higher Math is a golden strong ale fermented with sour cherry juice and cocoa nibs. Clocking in at 17% ABV and 35 IBUs, it is definitely a brew to sip and enjoy over a longer period of time. It has a beautiful mahogany color and amazing cherry fruit aroma.

When I first tried Higher Math, I was working and we had just had a huge tapping at work to celebrate 20 off centered years of Dogfish. Everyone was excited to try Higher Math since none of us had had it before. I thought the aroma was great. That is one of my favorite things about beer...the aroma. It makes me want to live in the glass that I'm drinking out of. It's almost more important to me than the actual taste of the beer...I know that might sound a little crazy to some people. My first initial taste of the beer was a little indecisive. It is super boozy. Almost a little too overpowering. I'm not sure what I expected from a beer that's 17% ABV...
We bought 2 bottles of Higher Math and put one in our fridge to drink and one to age. Honestly I wish we had a few more bottles aging because I think this beer would be so amazing three years from now. Now that we've cracked open the one in the fridge, I like it a lot more than when I first tasted it. The color is probably the best color of any beer I've ever had (and that's a lot of beer.... over 700 according to my Untappd account...just saying...) The flavors have mellowed out a little bit. It is still super boozy, but for the type of beer it is, it's unlike anything I've tasted before. I would definitely recommend this beer if you are looking for something that's pungent, smells delicious, and gets you a little drunk.

I was super excited when I heard word of a 20 year anniversary beer from Dogfish Head! When it was tapped at the Alehouse, I was unable to make it up for the release party. Slightly disappointed that I missed out, and hearing everyone's mixed reviews I knew I had to get my hands on some! Steff and I made it over to Whole Foods in Fair Lakes and scooped up two bottles, one for aging and one for drinking. Somehow in all of our beer drinking and benders, it got pushed to the back of the fridge, and slipped out of our minds. Today while making dinner we decided to break her open and give it a taste.
The aroma is very subtle with a slight hint of cherries. I would totally turn this into a candle and burn it all the time! My favorite part of this beer is honestly the color. I am not the type of guy to know different shades and hues of things, but this beer has the most elegant mahogany, slightly copperish color that I think I've ever seen! I mean I want to have a desk or a book shelf with this color. The flavor however is a bit disappointing to me. It reminds me of the Nyquil I take before bed when I'm sick. It is too sweet, too boozy, and just not my thing. I am glad that we picked up an extra one, because it may be amazing after it's been aged. It reminds me of the Olde School barleywine by Dogfish Head, not my thing when it's fresh, but after a few years in a dark room, it's amazing! Pretty sure this one is gonna be the same way.
Check back with us later to see what we are drinking next!
